It took me a little while to adjust to this bass, and initially I would give the sound and 5 but the playability a three or four. However, I was coming from a Japanese Aria with a thin neck that could really just shred. After getting used to the dynamic electronics of the G&L, adjusting the setup, and outfitting the bass with Elixir Super Lights, it's a joy to play. It's still chunkier than some European basses (seems most American basses are) but it's rock solid and has incredible sustain. It will make cheap amps sound expensive and expensive amps sound like gold. I keep away from the active option, but if you need extra punch and brightness, punch up the onboard EQ. One design gripe that I don't have to deal with since I never use the active electronics: no easy-to-open battery case. You've got to unscrew the whole back plate, so be god and don't strip the screws.
