Dean E09 Edge Bass, Mahogany Finish

Product Description

It is often said the "beauty is skin deep," but the Dean Edge Bass is clearly and exception. While beauty was the inspiration, we put every bit of our 20-plus years of design experience into these models. We started with a body styled and contoured for comfort, and to make them lighter we used choice basswood. The maple necks were profiled to be faster and sleeker than virtually all others. We designed a "uniquely Dean" custom neck joint and heel along with our asymmetrical four-bolt pattern, creating uninterrupted access all the way up the two octave neck. The Edge Bass is offered in four, five and six string models. Experience one of the world's finest basses. E09 M is the most affordable in the Edge Line.

  • 34-inch maple neck with rosewood fretboard and abalone dot inlays
  • Dean passive soapbar pickup with volume and treble controls
  • Dean vintage-style bridge with adjustable intonation
  • Diecast Dean tuners
  • Basswood body with mahogany top and natural satin finish

I've been learning to play bass with this model for about a year and a half, and I enjoy it thoroughly. It's lighter than some instruments, but still has enough mass that it has a good tone. The neck is maybe not as slender as some fancier, faster basses, but it's still quite comfortable. It stays in tune well, and I've never had any troubles with the knobs or electronics.

With only a single pickup, and just knobs for volume and treble, you don't have much flexibility in sound. If you're just learning or playing for fun, this isn't much of an issue. The bass sounds great for a variety of jazz, blues and rock. One person I play with thinks the tone from this bass is nicer than one of his that cost about eight times as much.

A couple of other thoughts... You'll want to find a local guitar store to help you make adjustments periodically (and perhaps with initial setup), or learn to do it yourself. I use a Behringer practice amp, and it's partially responsible... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars OK beginner and Dean is great, but..., December 18, 2007

Why not step up to Dean Edge 10a with active electronics?! You will get two pick-ups and way more tone options for $149!!! The 09 is ok for a throw in the trunk type bass but for a few bucks more you can get so much more. BTW, my son has a black 09 and a black 10a so we have played/heard both side by side. To put it in perspective we bought a beater 09 of CL for $25 and are in the process of defretting it as a first time experiment. The 09 is a great candidate for something like that where a mistake won't hurt too bad. You should be able to pick up a black 09 for around $100 new. Maybe the natural look is worth the extra to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for a beginner bass, September 17, 2010

I paid under a hundred bucks. With a single passive pickup this isn't a high end bass, but I hadn't played in over 40 years and it lets me get back into music cheap. Good looking unit, good build quality. Wish it had flat wounds as the OEM strings are a bit buzzy, but if I get into anything other than hobby playing I'll make the investment. All in all it's a respectable deal and I'm happy.
